WELLINGTON.

Jan. 12. Arrived — Ship Pleiades, from London, 1 04 days from the Downs ;46 passengers and a large general cargo. Up to noon to-day the Luna had not succeeded in again hooking the cable. The cause of the mishap on Monday, -when unquestionably they had the cable, appears to have been that there was not enough turns round the drum for winding up, and that either the pitching of the vessel or the weight of the suspended cable caused unusual strain, the turns round the drum slipped and the cable and the grapnel were gone. Another grapnel was soon beut on but for the first time they came on a large rocky patch, and after dragging some time without sign of the cable the grapnel was hauled up, when it was found so injured by being dragged over the rocky bottom as to be quite useless. Wind and sea about this time arose, and it was decided to run for Lyell's Bay and communicate with town. _, Tuesday. While at Lyell's Bay we received irom town a chart showing the course taken by Captain Kennedy nine years ago when the cable was laid. This doubtless will prove of great value. Wednesday. At 2 o'clock this morning the Luna got back to the place where she hooked the cable, but there was such a heavy sea on it was out of the question to ao anything, and went back to Lyell's Bay ; they will make another attempt immediately if the weather moderates. (From a Correspondent.) Manawatu election -The 'Post' this evening gives the correct number of Wellington votes polled at Paikakariki, namely,

Johnston, 33; Buller, 4. The actual result is, that of votes recorded in the Manawatu district alone the numbers were i —Buller, 160; Johnston, 158; thus giving the former a majority of two in the district. Dr. Buller has lost the neat through the outside Wellington votes, but he has every reason to be proud of the position the district itself gave him on fche poll.
