REVENUE COLLECTED FOR QUARTER

ENDING SEPTEMBER 30, 1878. The last Gazette contains the full particulars of the Customs Revenue collected in the quarter ending 30th September. The total shows a most gratifying increase, being £3G5,493 for the present year, as against £309,098 for the corresponding period of last year. From the return we take tin; tota's for the chief ports, which are here given :

It will be seen that Wanganui. ranking' tenth in order of commercial importance la.-t year, hu.s gained a place this year, " bumping" Hnkltika. Throughout Wanganui's increase has brr.-i >it/ai!y but regular, freefrom'the sudden rise due iV-on hninignition on the one hand, and the depression <>f the goldfields on the other. The articles on wiiiub. the duties were collected, together with the amounts, are here shown ;

In every article but New Zealand spirits the return shows a marked increase. The spirits distilled in the colony previous to the abolition of the Distillation Act being now nearly all consumed, this item will disappear from the list altogether. Under the Customs Tm'.ff Aot of this session some important reductions will come into operation on the Ist of January next, so that a corresponding increase cannot be anticipated for the last half of the financial year.
