HOUSE.
Tuesday, 19th September, 1876. PRINCES STREET RESERVE. Mr. Taiaroa asked the Native Minister, If the Government will have the sum of £6,000, with interest, placed upon the estimates to be paid to the Native owners of the Princes Street Reserve, being rents due up to the issue of the Crown grant ? He had already, on a previous occasion, explained the reason which induced him to put the question on the Paper, and he would therefore content himself now with expressing a hope that the Native Minister would give a favourable reply. Sir P. McLean" said it was not the intention of the G-overnment to put anything on the estimates to meet this particular claim, inasmuch as it was understood to have been settled or compromised by the Provincial G-overnment of Otago, which paid the sum of £5,000 for the Princes Street Reserve. Under these circumstances there was no sufficient reason to induce the Government to place a sum on the estimates for this particular purpose, the payment by the Provincial Government being considered to be final. "Wednesday, 20th September, 1576. The Maori Representation Bill was read a third time after a number of its clauses had been negatived, among which was clause 3 —That the number of Maori members of the House of Representatives be increased to seven.
