THE MAORI POPULATION.

Among the papers laid before Parliament by the Minister for Native Affairs was an approximate census of the Maori population, compiled by the officers who represent the Government in the Native districts. Prom it we find that the number of the Native race is estimated at 40.016, of whom there are -13,-JOS in the North Island, and only 2,60S in the South Island. In both islands the males exceed the females in number, the excess of the former in the North Island being 3,870, and in the latter 226. Wairoa : Males, -1-1; females, 37. Lower Waikato : Miles, 211; females, 172. Upper "Waikato : Males, 2,-1-07 ; females, 1,987. Raglan aud Kawhia: Males, 1,050; females, 1,113. Hauraki: Males, 947; females, 717. Tauranga : Males, 662 ; females, 583. Maketu: Males, 1,51-6; females, 1,339. Opotiki: Males, 1,042 ; females, 906. Uriwera : Males, 348 ; females, 336. Waiapu: Males, 1,345; females, I,IOS. Turanga: Males: 788 ; females, 602. These are the numbers for the Auckland Province. For the Province of Hawke's Bay there are:— Wairoa: Males, I,SS9 ; females, 1,592. South of the Tangoio River: Males, 970 ; females, 900. Taupo : Males, 442 ; females, 408. Wairarapa: Males, 417; females, 325. In the Province of Taranaki: Males and females, 1,250; 889 females; children, 622: total, 2,761. AVanganui: Males, 556 ; females, 454.
