GREYTOWN

LEAGUE OF MOTHERS “FATHERS’ NIGHT” I (“Times-Age” Special.) The League of Mothers held their ‘Fathers’ Night” in the Parish Hall last evening. Mrs T. N. Smallwood occupied the chair and there was a good attendance. Sympathy was expressed with Mesdames H. Rees and Dennes in their recent bereavements. A short programme was given. Mrs Brooking played two pianoforte solos and Mrs E. Drysdale piano accordion solos. Two glees were rendered by the League choir. A competition aranged by Mrs Wiggins was won by Mrs Vinsen and Mr Brooking. Mrs T. N. Smallwood was presented with a posy and Mrs Brooking received a posy with the good wishes from the League on her departure from Greytown. The floral sprays were the work of Mi’s W. J. Knell. The Rev J. R. Higgs, of Featherston, was the speaker and took for his subject the ‘Far East.” In China and Japan he spent many years just prior to the war. He gave many incidents, grave and gay, on the life of the people of both countries. He was accorded a vote of thanks, moved by Mr Coleman, on behalf of the fathers present. Supper was served by the ladies' committee. WEDDING GRAY—BENNETT The marriage took place recently at St. Luke’s Church, Greytown, of Bettina Helen, third daughter of Pte. and Mrs J. H. Bennett, Lower Hutt, and George Edwin, second son of Mr and Mrs H. L. Gray, Greytown. The Rev J. C. Abbott was the officiating minister. The bride, who entered the church with her father, wore a frock ,of ivory brocaded satin The bodice was gathered into a diamond shaped waist band, and a spray of orange blossom was worn at the high neckline. The fitting sleeves formed a peak over the wrist, and the full skirt fell into a long train. A halo of orange blosom held her long embroidered tulle veil, which was lent by her eldest sister, Mrs G. Gray, Hawke’s Bay. The bride carried a shower bouquet of cream roses, button hydrangeas, and chrysanthemums. On leaving the church the bride was presented with a horseshoe by her small nephew, Eric Gray. The bridesmaids were Misses Thurga and Dorothy Bennett, sisters of the bride. Their long frocks of Dutch blue and salmon pink georgette over satin had gathered bodices which formed a V neck, and the full skirts fell from rounded waistbands. The long full sleeves were gathered into a wristband. They both wore a double string of pearls. Matching flowers were worn in their hair, and they carried shower bouquets of pink and blue hydrangeas, dahlias and chrysanthemums. Beverley Gray, niece of the bride, was flowergirl and she wore lavender georgette over satin with rucked bodice, a Peter Pan collar and short full sleeves with a full skirt finished with a frill. She wore a Dolly Vardon hat and carried a small basket of flowers.

L.A.C’s. Henry and Trevor Gray, brothers of the bridegroom, attended as best man and groomsman, respectively. Afterwards a reception followed by a dance was held in the Odd Fellows’ Hall. The bride's mother, assisted by the bridegroom’s mother, received the guests. Mrs Bennett was dressed in Burgundy figured taffeta and Mrs Gray wore navy georgette. Both wore shoulder sprays. Later, when Mr and Mrs Gray left for the nprth, Mrs Gray wore a blue woollen frock and black accessories. Their future home will be in Grey town. Personal Items Miss D. Tully, of Waipawa, is spendifng the school vacation with her mother, Mrs Tully, Senr. (Main Street). Mrs W. Haley is spending a holiday with her daughter, Mrs J. Martin, St. Albans, Christchurch. Prior to leaving for Auckland to take up his new position, Mr C. Brooking, who has ben in charge of the secondary department of the Greytown District High School, was presented with a gift from the pupils. The presentation was made by Miss Mi O’Neale, who thanked him on behalf of the pupils for what he had done for them. Mr Brooking suitably replied. The hall had been nicely decorated by the pupils of the secondary department and was filled with pupils, their parents and friends. A very happy time was spent in dancing and items given by the pupils were enjoyed. Supper was served. The music for the dancing was supplied by Mr S. Te Tau.

Soldiers’ Parcels Fund There was a good attendance at a dance recently held in the Odd Fellows’ Hall, in aid of the local soldiers’, parcels (overseas) fund. The music was supplied by an orchestra and much appreciated extras were contributed by Mr J. Feast and Mr Geo. Boyd. Mr lan Buick was M.C. The Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss J. Hibbard and partner. A lucky spot fox trot was won by Mr and Mrs C. Morris and a lucky spot waltz byMiss K. O'Rielly and partner. TOWN HALL “ONE DANGEROUS NIGHT.” The excellent double programme tonight will be headed by the thrilling drama, “One Dangerous Night,” in which Warren William, Marguerite Chapman and Eric Blore take the principal roles. A splendid western drama, “Twilight on the Trail,” starring William Boyd, Andy Clyde, Brad King and Wand McKay, will also be shown.
