GREEK FORCES

DISORDERS ALMOST CLEARED UP STATEMENT BY MR CHURCHILL PEOPLE TO MAKE FREE CHOICE OF GOVERNMENT (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 10.55 a.m.) RUGBY, April 26. ’ Mr Churchill made a statement in the House of Commons on the Greek dissensions. He said the disorders which had recently broken out in the Greek Army and Navy had now been almost completely cleared up. “It is for the Greek Government to decide what measures shall be taken against those responsible for these deplorable incidents in their forces/’ the British Prime Minister added. “It must be remembered that a British officer was killed. In the hope of putting an end to political disunity, the King of the Hellenes had already declared his intention of forming a Government as representative as possible, made up of all trends of patriotic opinions, to the exclusion only of those who had collaborated with the enemy against their fellow-countrymen. The British Government is in full agreement with this policy and will give the King of the Hellenes and his Government all possible support in its execution.” Mr Churchill was then asked to do everything possible to see that the interests'of those in Greece now fighting against the enemy were fully represented in the Government: and to give an assurance to the Greek people that we should not attempt to force a government upon them against their wishes. He replied: “We shall certainly try to get representatives in the Government of those who are really fighting the enemy. Sofrie seem to be more busy fighting their own countrymen. With regard to the future of Greece, it has been repeatedly stated that we shall not interfere in any way with the decision of the Greek people once normal conditions are more or less restored.”
