Miss M. Sellar, who has been visiting Masterton, has returned to Paraparaumu Beach.
Mr and Mrs A. O’Dowd, of Konini, announce the engagement of their elder daughter, Joyce Louise, to Robert, only son of Mr and Mrs R. J. Bestford, Wairoa.
The engagement is announced of Phoebe Mary, younger daughter of Mr and Mrs Guy H. Graham, “Huanui,” Waverley, to William Oswald (Punch), younger son of Mr and Mrs Oswald Nelson. “Mangapapa,” Hastings. News has just been received of the engagement of Rosemary, elder daughter of Mr and Mrs H. T. Ramage, of Fallingbrook Road, Toronto, Canada, to Pilot Officer R. P. Perry, elder son of Mr and Mrs 8.-P. Perry, of Longbush, Masterton. Messrs H. H. Mawley (chairman), and Trevor Beetham have been appointed to represent the Wairarapa Hospital Board on the committee for the joint control of Pukeora sanatorium. The committee will meet at Waipukurau. Mr P. R. Welch was appointed a substitute member.
The many friends in Masterton of Mr and Mrs Fred Ryan, of Napier, and formerly of Lower Hutt, will I’egret to hear of the death of their young daughter Valerie, which occurred at Napier yesterday. Mrs Ryan was formerly Miss Molly Stimpson, of Masterton.
“I do not think that the people of this town will ever know what it owes to the late Mr T. F. Watson,” observed the Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, when referring at last night’s meeting of the Masterton Borough Council to Mr Watson's death. It was decided to send a letter of sympathy to Mrs Watson and family. The resignation of the sub-matron of the Masterton Hospital, Miss M. Brown, was received with regret at yesterday’s meeting of the Wairarapa Hospital Board. Miss Brown has been appointed matron of the Taumarunui Hospital. It was decided to send Miss Brown a letter expressing good wishes for her future, and the board placed on record appreciation of her splendid services as sub-matron and as a tutor sister.
The electrical engineer at the Master- . ton Hospital, Mr T. Massey, has resigned from the employment of the Wairarapa Hospital Board after 12 years’ service, to take up the position of electrical engineer at the Hutt Valley Hospital. Mr Massey’s resignation was received with regret at yesterday’s meeting of the Wairarapa Hospital Board. The board expressed appreciation of Mr Massey’s services. The resignation of the medical superintendent of the Pahiatua Hospital, Dr. Hugh Paterson, was received with regret at yesterday’s meeting of the Wairarapa Hospital Board. It was decided to place on record an acknowledgment of Dr. Paterson's services both to the board and to the public over 33 years. Mr H. H. Mawley, chairman, said Dr. Paterson’s resignation was a great loss to the hospital and to the people of Pahiatua. Dr. Paterson was held in high esteem and had done a fine job. For 50 years a cab driver in Wellington, Mr Robert Mason died last Tuesday, aged 92 years. Mr Mason took up cab 'driving in 1873, when the roads were very rough and no licences were required. Fares were low, the charge for a run from Abel Smith Street to Molesworth Street being sixpence. With the coining of motor-cars, the horse and cab business gradually declined, but Mr Mason continued to ply, becoming one of the last cab drivers to be seen on Wellington streets. He retired 20 years ago.
