INEFFECTIVE JAPANESE OPPOSITION. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 11.55 a.m.) LONDON, January 4. Catalina flying-boats which bombed Paramushiro (in the Kurils) also raided the Japanese naval base at Kaiota, on Shimushu, across the Straits. The returning airmen said they arrived at Paramushiro in darkness, and met erratic anti-aircraft fire.. One Japanese fighter came up to meet the Catalinas, but inflicted no damage. The United Press points out that the raid marked the first occasion on which the Army sent Catalinas against the Kurils, which previously had been* attacked by Mitchells and Liberators.
