AUSTRALIAN GIRLS
SOME DESERTED BY AMERICAN HUSBANDS. WOMAN SENATOR’S PROPOSAL. (By Telegraph—(Press Association—Copyright) SYDNEY, December 6. ‘I have been amazed by the number of Australian-American marriages' that have foundered,” said Senator Dorothy Tangney. Because of the law of domicile, Australian girls who have been deserted by their American soldier’ husbands were unable to obtain either a divorce or maintenance orders, she said. Senator Tangney is seeking the gazetting of a national security regulation to overcome the difficulty. Under the present law of domicile, these girls, some of whom had babies and were without maintenance of any sort from their husbands, could obtain, redress or divorce only if they went to America or could afford to pay the fees of an American solicitor to act in America on their behalf. Most of these unhappy marriages, said Senator Tangney, were contracted before June, 1942, when the American regulations governing the marriage abroad of United States se’rvice personnel were tightened up.
