MAGISTRATE’S COURT
SITTING IN MASTERTON ' TODAY POLICE RAID ON TAUERU HOTEL. THEFT BY LABOURER. The fortnightly sitting of the Masterton. Magistrate’s Court was held this morning. Mr H. ,P. Lawry, S.M., was on the Bench. A police raid on the Taueru Hotel oxi November 12 resulted in the publican, William Arthur Jones being fined £lO and £2 2s costs on each of two charges relating to the sale and consumption of liquor after’ hours. Senior Sergeant C. Murphy said that he had previously twice warned Jones. The case was a serious one and he asked for a conviction on both charges. Mr R. McKenzie appeared for Jones and pleaded guilty. Francis John Heaven, Leslie Gray, William Robinson, Arthur James Way, Tui Waitere and William G. Walker were each fined £2 with 14s costs for having purchased liquor after hours. ' Walker was also charged with having attempted to remove liquor from licensed premises after hours. He was fined £2 with 14s costs. Donald John Jackson was fined £2 with 10s costs for having been in possession of liquor in the vicinity of a hall at Tinui while a dance was being held on November 12. Douglas Gordon Brough, a labourer, of Australia, was charged with the theft of £35. Senior Detective W. Kane said Brough was working as a gardener at Lansdowne and stole £35 from his em-
ployer’s wallet. He arrested Brough at Featherston. “Apart from your list in Australia you have 14 convictions against you in New Zealand,” observed Mr Lawry in sentencing Brough to three months' imprisonment.
