AMERICAN MARINES

EXPRESSION OF GRATITUDE. On behalf of his comrades, a member of the United States Marine Corps (William C. Pofahl) has dropped into poetry in expressions of gratitude to Masterton and to the Red Cross volunteers of this district. His verses follow: — THANK YOU, MASTERTON We’ve sailed all over this ocean, And of places we have seen None can equal New Zealand, Next to home, for any Marine. We were welcomed in with open arms. Plus kind and generous care, The good times we had and friends we met Made us wish we could always be there. We thank you for all those splendid week-ends And the many invitations to tea. I wish that my pen could only compile Enough thanks for my buddies and me. Some of us had a try at golf, And my, what scores we had! But the enjoyment received and friendships gained Cheered us up, and made us quite glad. So to you, dear people, kind and true, I will end my poem this way, Not to say “good-bye,” but “Cheerio,” Until time bids come what may. TO RED CROSS VOLUNTEERS Thank you, girls, for your kind service, In waiting on hungry Marines, And taking their cheek with a smile on your face Is something that’s seldom seen. I know that at times we were rowdy, For Marines are sometimes that way, But we hope that you will excuse it, As we part and go on our way. . We may not be able to say goodbye, As we would like to do. So please remember wherever we go, Our thoughts will be of you.
