BLACK SEA BASE
NOVOROSSISK CAPTURED BY RUSSIANS VICTORY CELEBRATED IN MOSCOW. FURTHER IMPORTANT GAINS IN DRIVE ON DNIEPER. LONDON, September 16. The Russians announce several notable victories. Chief among them is the capture of the Black Sea port of Novorossisk, after five clays of bitter fighting. The Russians used sea and land forces. Novorossisk had been in German hands since September, 1942. This success was announced by Marshal Stalin in a special order of the day. The capture of Novorossisk makes the Germans’ position in the Kuban a dangerous one. Their main supply base is lost 'and their line of retreat by sea is cut off. A salvo of 124 guns was fired in Moscow to mark the victory and the guns of the Black Sea Fleet saluted the troops and ships responsible. In another order of the day, Marshal Stalin announces the capture of an important city 70 miles south-west of Bryansk. It was retaken by the Russians after a week’s fighting. In their drive towards Kiev, the Russians have taken Nosovka, 60 miles from the Ukrainian capital.
