SALE OF APPLES
AT MORE THAN PERMITTED PRICE ALLEGED IN MASTERTON. DEPARTMENT READY TO TAKE ACTION. Complaints have been received by the Masterion branch of the Department of Labour that' apples are being sold in Masterton at varying prices above the 6d per lb fixed by the Price Tribunal. The Department of Labour is the local agent for the Price Tribunal. Price Order No. 115, which applies only to apples of the 1942 crop, states that the maximum price that may be charged or received by any retailer shall be 6d per lb. The Inspector of Labour, Mr N. Pelvin, in supplying the information, suggested that it was in the interests of the public to see that it did not pay more than the fixed price for apples. If any infringements were allowed to go by the board the purpose of the regulations would be defeated. His Department would investigate any witnessed sale in which it was alleged that the price charged vVas in excess of that authorised in the Price Tribunal’s order. The Department had also received complaints, he said, that when customers had refused to pay 'prices higher than those fixed by the Price Tribunal, fruiterers had refused to make a sale. Provision was made by law to deal with such cases.
