CARTERTON

YOUNG FARMERS’ CLUB MONTHLY MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Carterton Young Farmers’ Club was held in the P. and A. rooms. The chairman, Mr J. Rose, presided over a fair attendance. Mr J. Rose gave a report on the meeting held in Masterton last month. It was.decided to ask Mr W. H. HaU to give a demonstration on dairy cattle at a field day to be held at Mr L. Daniell’s property, Masterton, on May 7. A debate was held, the subject being: “That a women’s land army would be successful in New Zealand.” A good argument ensued, and the affirmative won by a narrow margin. The teams were: Affirmative, R. Andrews (leader), Hannah, and M. Renall. Negative: H. Staples (leader), B. Card and G. Rayner. Messrs B. Card and G. Rayner were appointed to the executive committee.

Hockey. The annual meeting of the Carterton Ladies’ Hockey Club was held on Saturday. A satisfactory credit balance was shown. The election of officers resulted: Patron, Mr M. J. Parker; president, Mr W. Knowles; vicepresident. Mi' Ward; delegates to the Wairarapa Ladies’ Hockey Association, Mrs A. Scott and Miss N. Ward; secretary, Miss M. Parker. Carterton Public Library. The annual meeting of subscribers to the Carterton Public Library will be held at the library building on Wednesday evening (tomorrow). A representative meeting is expected. The chairman’s report for the past year mentions that the year has been a very successful one. A greater number of new books have been placed on the shelves and a further increase in membership shows the public’s appreciation of the service rendered by the library. The subscriptions realised £lO7 15s 6d, and the amount spent on new books was £93 18s sd. Arrangements have been made with an importing firm whereby a copy of each book received by them is sent to the library committee on approval. The average cost per book is now approximately Us 6d and members are urged to take the greatest care of their books. The reading room has been freely used by members of the military forces as well as the general public.

Personal Items. Mr W. Hadley’s many friends will regret to hear that his health has compelled him to enter Croydon private hospital for medical treatment. News was received in Carterton yesterday of the death at Palmerston North of Mr Joseph Alfred Tinsley, eldest son of Mr Alfred Tinsley, of Waihakeke. Deceased was a builder by trade and had worked in various parts of the North Island with the Fletcher Construction Company. Quite recently he was engaged in bridge-building in the Stratford district. He leaves a widow and a son aged 14 years. Mrs K. Groves, Wairarapa Provincial president of the W.D.F.U., and Mrs J. Maitland attended the interprovincial round-table conference held at Palmerston North yesterday.

Soldiers’ Parcels. The Carterton Patriotic Committee last weekend forwarded to Wellington the Carterton and district quota of parcels for men overseas. There were 212 in all. Druids’ Lodge. Arch Druid Bro H. Matson presided over the usual meeting of Totara Lodge, held last night. A vote of condolence was passed with Bro Percy Rayner in the death of his brother Albert. One benefit member was initiated into the Order. Members are reminded of the parade on Anzac Day at 11.30 a.m. At Memorial Square the District President will lay the lodge wreath in memory of thirteen members of Totara Lodge who fell in the Great War.

REGENT THEATRE “ROAD SHOW.” The programme at the Regent Theatre tonight will be headed by “Road Show,” with Adolphe Menjou, Carole Landis and John Hubbard in the laugh parade of 1942, with the same stars as “Turnabout.”
