COUNTY AFFAIRS

MEETING OF MASTERTON; COUNCIL CONSUMPTION OF PETROL. APPEAL FOR REDUCTION. A meeting of the Masterton County Council was held yesterday at which there were present Mr R. E. Gordon Lee (chairman), and Councillors H. H. Mawley. J. Donald, W. I. Armstrong, G. Moore, J. V/. Colquhoun, P. R. Welch and the clerk Mr J. C. D. Mackley. An appeal to the council for a reduction in its petrol consumption was made by the Oil Fuel Controller. The council was asked to reduce its consumption to the absolute minimum. Mr Mackley said that everything possible had been done to reduce the amount of petrol used and there would be an intensification of these efforts. It was reported that six notices of sales of property in the county had been received during the month. Accounts amounting to £4.798 12s sd. recommended by the finance committee, were passed. Nine cattle and a horse had been impounded during the month, the ranger reported. The month’s fees amounted to £4 12s, and the total collected to date was £7 17s.

Progress with the construction of the Waihora Stream bridge on the Homewood Road and Kummer’s Bridge on the Paierau Road was reported by the engineers. Messrs Seaton, Sladden and Pavitt.

Maintenance work in the ridings was reported on by the overseer, Mr B. L. Larson.
