CARTERTON

WAR SERVICE MEETING OF WOMEN'S AUXILIARY. (“Times-Age” Special.) A meeting of the Women's War Service, Auxiliary Committee was held in the Borough Council Chambers yesterday afternoon. Mrs H. E. Ordish/presided and there were also present: Mesdames W. H. Hall, A. F. Pink, Miss O. AV. Wolters and Mrs F. L. Barr, secretary. The president outlined the scheme in connection with the training of canteen workers, and it was decided to hold a meeting in . connection therewith in the P. and A. rooms on Friday next, when particulars of the scheme will be supplied to members. It was announced that the first aid course for the transport and cycling corps was being well attended. Members displayed enthusiasm in their training. Registered members and intending members of the Carterton corps of the Women’s War Service Auxiliary are requested to attend a meeting to be held in the P. and A. rooms, Carterton, on Friday at 2.30 p.m. As the business will be of an important character, it is hoped that all women interested will make a special effort to be present. Golf. The following is the draw for the second qualifying round of the championship: From No. 1 tee: Hughes and Johansen, Booth and Goodin, Dudson and Taylor, Brown and Harrington, M. Knowles and Gustofson; from No. 3 tee, Moroney and Steel, Riggs and Whitburn, Hart and Fisher, Smart and Hill, A. Pankhurst and Clarke; from No. 17 tee, Colson and Lawrence, Candy and Dwane, Nix and Callender, W. Knowles and G. Pankhurst. Jackson and Broadbent. SOCIAL GATHERING IN HONOUR OF SAPPER HOPKINS. The local bandroom was crowded last evening when Sapper Leith Hopkins was entertained at a social gathering. Visitors from all parts of the district were present. Supper was provided by an energetic committee of ladies. After supper Mr S. O’Connor, in a happy speech, wished Sapper Hopkins the best of luck, and presented him with a well-filled envelope on behalf of those present. Sapper Hopkins suitably replied. Music for dancing was provided by Mrs Ashton's orchestra, extras being played by Misses M. Herrick and V. Irwin. Vocal items were given by Mrs F. Curry.

' Personal Items. A,mong those present at the late Mr ’Nicholson's funeral yesterday was Mr Gothard, a very old friend of deceased and a member of the Woodville Bowling Club at the time Mr Nicholson was associated with it. ■ There was a representative cortege at the funeral of the late Mr Charles Nicholson, which took place at the Clareville Cemetery yesterday. The services at the house and the graveside were conducted by the Rev. W. J. Couling. Captain Ojalla, of the Salvation Army, assisted in the ceremony at the graveside. Beautiful wreaths and crosses of flowers covered the casket, among them being a wreath from the Carterton Bowling Club, of which institution deceased was a member at the time of his death. The pallbearers -were Messrs Gordon Hughan, E. Smith, C. J. DeLacey, Geo. Riggs, W. Steven and H. Rayner, members of the Carterton Bowling Club. The many friends in Carterton of Mrs D. G. Johnston will regret to leant that she is an inmate of the Wellington Hospital. At the home of Mrs Hopkins last evening a presentation was made by Mr C. Manley to Private L. Hindrup, on behalf of those present. Soldier to be Honoured. Pte. M. Rose, of Parkvale, who is at present on leave from military duties is to be entertained next Saturday evening and a presentation made him by the residents of Parkvale and district. Mrs Ashton’s Orchestra will provide the music. The prices of admission are 2s and Is, and the ladies of Parkvale will supply a home-made supper. Pte. Rose has resided in the Parkvale district for several years and there is sure to be a large gathering of s’/ttlers. Soldiers on Leave. A large number of members of the N.Z.E.F. are on leave in Carterton, having arrived yesterday. They will all be entertained locally before returning to camp.
