Early Events in Attack on Russia AIR OPERATIONS FROM BALTIC TO BLACK SEA BREAKAWAY IN LITHUANIA REPORTED LONDON, June 23. The latest news of the fighting between Germany and Russia comes in a semi-official statement issued in Berlin, which claims that the German Army has secured the first tactical advantage by surprising enemy forces marching to the front. It has already gained considerable territory, the statement adds,. at several points. It is held that great masses of men will have to be thrown into the struggle by both sides. A German news agency states that German aircraft formations bombed Russian naval ports and bases in the Black Sea. They met the opposition of strong defences. Large fires m oil depots were caused. A correspondent of a Swedish paper quotes the Berlin Press to the effect that the Russians are retreating all along the line. Violent air attacks are said to have been made on Leningrad, Sebastopol and other places. The Germans claim that the Russians have suffered heavy losses in the air. A new Government has been formed in Lithuania, headed by a former Minister to Berlin. The Government has declared its independence from the Soviet Union.
