ENTRY INTO CITY
MADE BY FREE FRENCH FORCES BRITISH AIR ATTACKS ON TRANSPORT. MANY VEHICLES PUT OUT OF ACTION. LONDON, June 22. The occupation of Damascus yesterday was carried out by Free French forces, after the city had been hardpressed by British. Indian and Free French troops. British aircraft, which have attacked motor transport during the past few days, in one attack alone put out of action 30 machines. DEFENCE OF CYPRUS STRONG POSITIONS TAKEN UP BY AUSTRALIANS. LONDON, June 21. A British United Press correspondent at Nicosia, capital of Cyprus, says the Australians have taken up strong positions for the defence of the island. They are mechanised and are equipped with tanks and Bren-carriers. Ample food is available for a protracted defence.
STATE OF SIEGE EXTENDED ON TURKISH FRONTIERS. COMMENT ON THE PACT WITH GERMANY. LONDON, June 21. The Turkish Government has prolonged the state of siege In Istanbul and the zones bordering Russia, Bulgaria, Syria and Iraq for a further six months. In Istanbul the police are making lists of the air-raid shelters. The Rome correspondent of Swedish newspapers yesterday linked the Tur-kish-German pact with the RussianGerman crisis, saying that Rome docs not regard the Turkish pact as a complete success, but as a clever compromise which may produce decisive results later and prevent British intervention from the south if RussianGerman relations grow worse.
