CITY EVACUATED BY VICHY FORCES
Attack on Mezzi Aerodrome MADE BY BRITISH AND INDIAN TROOPS SEVERE FIGHTING IN SEVERAL AREAS (By Telegraph.—Press Association.—Copyright.) LONDON, -June 22. The fall to Imperial troops of- Damascus, capital of Syria, is officially announced from British Middle East headquarters in Cairo. “In the face of enemy pressure and in order to avoid street fighting, French troops evacuated Damascus and occupied positions outside the city, ’ ’ states a communique issued by the Vichy commander, General Dentz, and broadcast by Beirut radio. General Dentz has assumed all executive and legislative powers in Syria. The Vichy Government claims that the British bombardment of Damascus caused disastrous fires in the main thoroughfare of the capital. The British military spokesman in Jerusalem says that the Allies pushed into the main lines of the capital’s defences under severe artillery fire. British and Indian who advanced against Mezze aerodrome, a few miles from Damascus, were hotly engaged and their exact position is uncertain.
