CHEERFUL VETERAN

AUSTRALIAN BRIGADIER DECORATED. Brigadier A. S. Allen of Sydney has been created a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in recognition of the important part played by his brigade in the Libyan campaign. In the last war he was given command of a battalion at the age of 23. In a comment on the operations at Messines he is described by the official war historian as a “cheerful young veteran.” It is stated that it was largely due to him that the 45th Australian Battalion kept up its spirit to the last- despite the fact that it came out of the battle with the loss of 16 officers and 552 men. Brigadier Allen is not a professional soldier. In private life he is a chartered accountant. practicing in Sydney.
