LEAGUE OF MOTHERS

MEETING IN MASTERTON YESTERDAY. ADDRESS ON CONDITIONS IN CHINA. The monthly meeting of the League of Mothers was held in the Parish Hall yesterday afternoon, the president, Mrs L. B. Maunsell, presiding. Mrs Maunsell admitted nine new members. Reference was made to the loss of a much esteemed member of the league, Mrs F. Judd and a vote of sympathy was extended to her family. Other members who had sustained loss were Dr. Helen Cowie and Mrs McWhinnie and members were asked to stand as a mark of respect. The speaker, who was warmly welcomed, was Miss Moncrieff, for many years Y.W.C.A. secretary in China. Her talk covered many phases of life in China and she stressed the important part being played by Chinese women since the outbreak of the war with Japan. In every sphere they were coming to the fore and business and professional women's clubs had come into being. These had been instrumental in educating the women of the country. The development of medical services was one of the most amazing things in China. This was being brought about by the need of the thousands of wounded that had to be'dealt with. Hygiene was a new term in China and much had been done in the camp organisation by the Y.W.C.A. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Miss Moncrieff. Two vocal solos were rendered by Mrs Ogilvy. The tea hostesses were Mesdames! Fagan. Clark, Swanson, Dagg and Stains.
