BY THE ALLIED FORCES IN SYRIA PROGRESS TOWARDS BEIRUT & DAMASCUS. DETERMINED COUNTER-ATTACK REPULSED. LONDON. June 18. In Syria the Allied forces continue to advance on Beirut and Damascus and between these two places have recaptured certain points which fell Into the hands of Vichy troops. A Cairo communique reports further progress in the coastal sector. Advance patrols are now about 20 miles from Beirut. South of Damascus further headway has been made in face of strong opposition by Vichy troops. A determined counter-attack was successfully repulsed.
