After a fierce battle lasting for three days British troops in the Western Desert have returned to their forward positions after inflicting heavy losses on the enemy and capturing many prisoners A Cairo communique states that yesterday, after repulsing several attacks by the enemy, who attempted an encircling movement against our advance troops the British forces withdrew, after completing their mission, which included a disclosure of the enemy’s strength and the inflicting of casualties. The British troops withdrew to their former positions, taking with them several hundreds of German prisoners. They destroyed a number of enemy tanks and guns. Aircraft gave full support to the land forces. Fighters destroyed 20 enemy planes and machine-gunned enemy motorised troops and attacked armoured cars and personnel. Other activity took place further behind the lines, targets at Benghazi, Bardia and Gazala being heavily bombed. Six British machines qre missing. .—_
