TURF NEWS AND NOTES

CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE AND COURSE Clarion Call a Proved J»per WILL ADD INTEREST TO EGMONT MEETING (BY “THE GRAFTER.'J Clarion Call, a proved horse over hurdles and country, will add interest to the Egmoni Steeplechase this week. The last occasion on which he raced across country he carried 11st 11b in the Grand National Steeplechase at Riccarton and won easily from Bryce Street and Valpeen. Later at the meeting he attempted to complete a coveted double in the National Hurdles, but under list 3ib was beaten into third place by Padishah (lOst 51b) and Fireguard (9r.i 11!b), the margins separating them being six lengths and a neck. Clarion Cail did not do any more racing last season, but this season'he has done well over hurdles, winning at Trentham and Ellerslie. and only once being out of a place in five starts. At his last start, at Ellerslie early in January, he won the New Year Hurdles run over two miles, carrying the solid burden of 12st 9lb. Two years ago Clarion Cail won the Egmont Steeplechase with lOst 121 b and then he was making a first appearance in a fade for eight months. With 11st ICib this time he cannot be called overburdened and as he is a proved stayer, up to weight, and a smart jumper. L. G. Morris’s charge should be difficult to beat. With the exception of Padishah, there has not been a better ailround jumper than Clarion Call in the Dominion for many seasons.
