AMATEUR ATHLETICS

MASTERTON CLUB. FIRST MEETING OF YEAR. Ideal conditions prevailed for the Masterten Amateur Athletic Club's opening meeting of the year, though the attendance was not up to usual. The firstrace was the 75 yards senior handicap. The first heat was won by R. Wyeth with W. Pullar and M. Sellar deadheat for second place, thus showing that distance men can hold their own with the sprinters. The second heat resulted in a win for E. Meurk, with D. Faulkner second and E. Martin third. R. Wyeth repeated his performance in the final by winning with a foot to spare from D. Faulknor and M. Sellar inches behind, third. J. Heaven ran a good race in the junior 75 yards handicap to win from P. . O'Brien and J. Harrington, who came through very fast at the finish. The fields were rather poor in the ladies events. However some thrilling finishes were witnessed, especially in the 75 yards handicap, when J. Grantham dead-heated for first place with M. Brett. The 100 yards handicap resuited in a win for J. Grantham, with M. Brett a good second. From a perfect start in the junior 300 yards handicap. H. Hayes came through with J. Heaven at his heels to stage a most thrilling tussle in the straight, with Hayes just prevailing. P. O'Brien put in a finishing burst to gain third place from three other competitors. R. Wyeth with a rather good handicap was never headed in the senior 300 yards race, winning by three yards from J. Eastwood, with B. Patrick third.
