The hottest day of the summer was experienced today, when the city temperature reached 106 degress. After a comparatively cool night a hot north wind arose in the early morning and by 9 a.m. the temperature was 90. High temperatures prevailed all over Victoria. , By 6 p.m. a cool change occurred, the temperature dropping about 20 degrees in 10 minutes. More hot weather is forecast and serious grass fires are expected later if the exceptionally hot conditions continue. ■ The heat today buckled several chains of the Mornington railway line so seriously that a special race tram was held up and the passengers had to continue their journey by car. Yesterday, when the temperature was only 101.4, Melbourne used 145,612.000 gallons of water.
