Few Whitebait Caught.

The first week of the Auckland whitebait season, which opened on July 2. has proved very lean. With the heavy rain that has fallen, the estuary of the Waikato River is still discoloured, and it is difficult to see the fish. One fisherman who had been trying his luck stated that a day's effort gives a haul at present of only about half a pound of fish. As yet no whitebait has been railed to market from either the Tuakau or Pukekohe railway stations, but a few families living near the estuary have been able to secure small parcels.
