SHARP REBUKE
ADMINISTERED TO GERMAN CONSUL. STATEMENT BY AUSTRALIAN MINISTER. By Telegraph—Press association —Copyright. CANBERRA, July 11. The statement by Herr Biasing, secretary of the German Consulate in Melbourne, criticising British policy in regard to the Danzig dispute, brought a sharp rebukg today from the Minister of External Affairs, Sir Henry Gullett.
He summoned the acting German Consul-General, Dr. Seger, to his office, and told him that it was quite beyond the function of any consular service in Australia to engage in propaganda against the United Kingdom. Such a course could only lead to difficulties. Sir Henry Gullett said he completely subscribed to Britain’s peace policy, and said that peace was not yet broken between the United Kingdom and Germany. He added that the Commonwealth Government desired that the relationship between Australia and Germany should continue upon the friendliest basis.
In a cabled report from Melbourne on Tuesday! Herr Biasing said: “In respect to Danzig, England is putting her fingei' into a pie which does not concern her.” REPLY BY CONSUL. DANZIG A GERMAN CITY. (Received This Day, 1.25 p.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. The Acting-Consul-General for Germany, Dr. Seger, commenting on an interview with Sir Henry Gullett (Minister for External Affairs) said he did] not wish to enter into a controversy, but in the eyes of all Germans Danzig was a German city.
