DIGGERS’ MARKET

TO BE HELD ON FRIDAY. After weeks of preparation the long looked for “Diggers’ Market” in aid of funds to entertain the Masterton quota of the visiting Australian exservice men in 1940, will open at the Municipal Hall on Friday at 10 a.m.. and will continue till 11 p.m. The Mayor (Mr T, Jordan) has consented to perform the official opening cere mony at 2 p.m. and will be followed by Mr J. Robertson, M.P., after whicli Mrs Jordan will present the prizes in the sweets, .cakes and knitting competitions. A large and varied assortment of goods and produce will be on sale, ranging from sweets, cakes, cookery, clothing, meat, poultry, hardware, books, tobacco, eggs, fancy goods,, and. in fact, articles of all sorts, sizes, makes, shapes and species, and the prices of all goods will be most reasonable. The “fun of the fair” will be provided in sideshows comprising archery, darts, fishing, roll downs, Mickey Mouse, crown tops, catch the balls, hoop-la, wonky saw. naildriving (ladies and men), knock-downs, shooting gallery, etc. The "Diggers” and their wives and friends have made every effort to ensure the success of the Market and the public are invited to attend and support the stalls and side shows. There is no charge for admission. The Inter house Girls’ goal throwing competition and the drawing of the Glenwood Doll Raffle will take place shortly after 9 p.m. The Public is advised to shop early at the Market to avoid the crush in the evening. Afternoon tea will be available at a moderate charge, and a special supper menu will be provided. All shop workers are requested to attend the Market after closing time of the shops. The

Wairarapa College Pipe Band is to play in Queen Street from 7 to 8 p.m. and the Municipal Band at the Market from 8.30 to 9.15 p.m. Jack Barnes’s Rhythm Boys Dance Band will also be in attendance and will play a selection of war-time melodies during the progress of the Market. All donors of goods are asked to arrange delivery at the Municipal Hall between 3 and 5 p.m. on Thursday, July 13. Delivery will be arranged by the R.S.A. on request.
