EUROPE’S SORE SPOT

THE DANZIG PROBLEM

SUGGESTED SOLUTION. CANAL FROM THE VISTULA TO GDYNIA. By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright. (Received This Day. 11.35 a.m.) SUVA, This Day. Sir Walter Carpenter, a passenger on the Mariposa, in an interview with the “Fiji Times-Herald." said: “The sore spot in Europe is Danzig, with a population composed almost entirely of German citizens. It would never incorporate with Poland. To give it to Germany at present would block Poland’s only access .to the sea.” Sir Walter suggested cutting a canal from the Vistula to the new Polish port of Gdynia, thus eliminating the necessity of using Danzig, and .Germany, England, France and Poland being invited to contribute to the cost, which would be less than that of one day’s war.
