Mr K. Carey, of the Wellington Education Board's relieving staff has been appointed an additional assistant at the Martinborough school. Mr Basil Falloon who underwent a serious operation in the Masterton Hospital is now making satisfactory progress towards recovery. Winner of the Military Cross for conspicuous gallantry in face of the enemy in a frontier skirmish, Lieutenant J. D. Maling, a young Christchurch man who has served six years with the Indian Army, returned to Wellington yesterday by the Wanganella, on furlough.

At "Oponia" Featherston, yesterday, the death occurred of Mr Charles Matthews. son of the late Mr and Mrs Alfred Matthews of Waiorongomai, Featherston. at the age of 68 years. The deceased had been engaged in farming at. "Oponia" for about 40 years. The late Mr Matthews was a noted breeder of sheep and cattle and took a keen interest in county affairs, having been a member of the local county council for some years. He was a brother of Mr R. Matthews, Waiorongomai and Mr Norman Matthews of Wharepapa. The interment of the remains of the late Mr Hugh Douglas Mclntosh took place privately at the Masterton Cemetery on Monday. The late Mr Mclntosh lost his life in the severe floods experienced in Hawke’s Bay last April. He was forced to seek refuge on the rafters of his whare and his death occurred as the result of exposure. He was buried near the Tongoio Lagoon, as it was found impossible at that time to arrange for a funeral. The late Mr Mclntosh was well known in Masterton. in which town he was born, and in other parts of the Wairarapa. At the interment on Monday the service was conducted by the Rev E. J. Rich. There was a representative attendance at the funeral yesterday afternoon of the late Mrs G. K. Shaw. The Rev John Davie conducted a service at the residence and also officiated at the graveside. A wealth of floral tributes was received from the many friends of Mrs Shaw, wreaths beingin evidence, among others, from the Central School Parents’ Association, Central School staff, Masterton Labour Party. Labour Party 'Social Committee. Masterton Labour Representation Committee, Mrs J. Robertson and Mr Robertson, M.P., the Waingawa Labourers’ Union, the Townswomen’s Guild, and workmates. The pall-bear-ers were: Messrs S'. Smith (representing the Returned Soldiers’ Association), G. W. Milne (Labour Party and Waingawa Works), A. W. McKenzie, M. Reid (relatives), L. G. Butcher and A. C. Hayes (friends of the family).
