OPTIMISTS CLUB

WEEKLY MEETING OF MEMBERS. ADDRESS ON NEWSPAPER WORK. Eighteen members of the Optimists Club were last night privileged to hear Mr J. D. Baybutt. Advertising Manager of the Wairarapa Times-Age, discourse on advertising, merchandising, news and general newspaper procedure at the weekly meeting of the club in the Y.M.C.A. To those members who are connected with the retail and selling trades his talk was indeed most interesting, and to those members employed in other trades, a comprehensive insight of newspapers in general and the “Wairarapa TimesAge” in particular - was imparted. Mr Baybutt’s talk was illustrated with clippings showing how our daily life is so influenced by the advertisements carried in the newspapers and his commentary on each advertisement and the work entailed in its production was listened to with great interest. In the time at his disposal the speaker continued to give a short description of the inside workings of a newspaper office, right from the time the cables are despatched from overseas till they are read in the daily paper. His speech was concluded with a very hearty invitation for members of the Optimists Club as a body or individually, „to “come over” and see how it is ‘ all done” at the “Times-Age” office. Deputy-Chief Smiler J. Duckworth, in the absence of Chief Smiler A. Handyside, thanked Mi - Baybutt for his most interesting talk, and members accorded the speaker a most hearty round of applause. It was announced that next Tuesday would be Ladies’ Night. The Club’s Padre, the Rev T. Pearson, conducted the Song Session, and Sheriff G. C. Gaze conducted a short but amusing “court,” An apology for absence was received from Mr R. Riley. Visitors tor the evening were L. Pither and J. Carle. Members extended to Mr D. C. McKee Wright their heartiest congratulations on a son being born to Mr and Mrs Wright. The pronouncing of the Benediction by the Padre closed another pleasant and instructive gathering.
