ECHO OF WAIRAU MASSACRE
SKELETON PROBABLY THAT OF TE RONGA.

Information given by descendants of Te Ronga, the Maori woman whose death from a British bullet led to the Wairau massacre, makes it practically certain that the skeleton found last week on a spur of Massacre Hill, Tuamarina, overlooking the scene of the first clash between Te Rauparaha’s party and Captain Wakefield’s men, is that of Te Ronga. Natives now state she was buried near the spot where she was slain. It had been intended to remove the body later for burial, probably in the North Island, but events after the massacre moved too quickly and the remains were left where they were buried.
