CHILLED BEEF

MASTERTON SHOW ENTRIES. LONDON JUDGES FAVOURABLY IMPRESSED. “We have rarely had such a fine consignment of chilled beef from the Dominions and for condition, colour, size and formation these quarters compared very favourably indeed with a run of selected Argentine beef," states a report received by Messrs T.' Borthwick and Sons from their London office on the chilled beef from the last Masterton Show, which was judged at Home.

"This weight and quality of beef is ideally suited to the best Smithfield trade and a continuity of supplies of this beef,” the report added "would command a good price and regular demand.” The judges found difficulty, in arriving at the eventual winner, owing to the very slight difference between the various pens but the weight of the winning pen decided the judges in their final selection.

First prize was awarded to pen No. 122 (Mr T. A. Brown>, which was unplaced at the Show. The four hinds were excellent in quality, good colour, and size and well covered. The four fores were correspondingly good. Second prize, pen No. 11l (Mr G. Shawl, unplaced al Show: This pen

was in most respects as good as pen 122. except that the quarters were a little heavier.

Third prize, pen No. 109 (Mr G. Shaw), placed first at Show: This pen was also excellent quality and compared favourably as regards shape and colour, but one body was slightly heavier and carried more fat in the hindquarters. In forwarding the report to the Masterton A. and P. Association. Mr Pat Borthwick, a director of the firm, congratulated all concerned on the excellent report received and added: "We trust next year that there will be very' much larger entries of similar cattle as we would like to see the good name that the Wairarapa already has for its chilled beef held on to.” Mr Brown wins the Borthwick cup and miniature.
