A VALUABLE GREEN MONKEY. After a partial eclipse caused by taxation, the passion for pets is again on the increase among women, writes a Parisian correspondent. For a time their favour ran to fish in bowls, anu except on journeys, when the bowl was a decided nuisance, it. gave little trouble to neighbours, and stayed quietly where it was put. Monkeys are worse. A wealthy American woman who is staying in Paris has nourished a passion for a little green monkey that she carried everywhere with her, fed at. the restaurant tables and introduced at all tea parties. She even took it with her to the beauty parlour which occupies a good deal of her time. But the monkey was a fragile little creature, and the violet rays used on its mistress for "slimming" treatment were pernicious lo the animal, so il was handed over 10 the safe keeping of a nurse attendant while the lady was* detained beneath the violet rays. Coming out from a long sitting, recently the American found her pet dead, drowned in the big bath that was full of water. The nurse in whose charge it had been left had, of course, other patients to attend to, and defended herself as beot she could, but the owner of the little green monkey is as angry as she is sad, and she is bringing a claim for 50,000 francs against the beauty parlour. At. the present rate of exchange this represents about £7OO, and 'the beauty parlour is fighting the claim. Its owner vows she will have no more pets admitted to her premises in the future.
