SOME GREAT LEADERS. The retirement from big cricket of the Australian captain, W. M. Wbodfull, will be regretted by sportsmen everywhere. Amid the controversy as to whom is best suited to take over the captaincy, “ Old 'Sport,” writing in this month’s Australian Journal, gives some interesting statistics regarding leaders of Australian and English elevens. W. M. Woodfull has skippered his side against England on no fewer than 15 occasions, and he also led the Australians against West Indies and South Africa, bringing 'his total to 25 games—a greater number than any other leader. W. L. Murdoch tossed the coin for Australia 16 times between 1880 and 1890, and J. Darling led the Australians against England on 18 occasions between 1899 and 1905. M. A. Noble,.with 15 matches to his credit, equals Woodfull’s tally against England. Other notable Australian captains have been W. W. Armstrong (10), H. L. Collins (9), J. M. Blackham (Australia’s only wicketkeepercaptain), and G. H. S. Trott (8) each. Others who have led Australia are P. S. McDonnell (6), J. Ryder, C. Hill, and S. Gregory (5); G. Giffen (4); D. W. Gregory and H. J. H. Scott (3); T. Horan (2); and H. H. Massie and W'. Bardsleiy once each. Among English captains the name of A. C. McLaren (22) stands out, and W. G. Grace (14), J. W'. U. T. Douglas (12), A. P. F. Chapman (9), A, E. Stoddart (8), A. Shrewsbury (7), P. F. Warner, F. S. Jackson, A. E. R. Gilligan, R'. E. S. Wyatt, D. R. Jardine (5 each) are also notable on the list. Other English skippers are A. W. Carr (4), Lillywhite (2), Lord Harris, A. Shaw, Lord Damley, and A. N. Hornby (4), F. L. Fane, C. B. Fry, Lord Tennyson (3 each); those who have led England on a single occasion are C. F. "Walters and J. C. White.
