SPORTS AT PARAWERA

ELLICOTT BLOCK SETTLERS’ ENTERPRISE. A correspondent on the Ellicott Block (Small Farms Scheme), near Parawera, forwards the. following “anticipations ” and “ training notes ” in connection with the sports gathering which it is proposed to be held there on Saturday next: —

Percy Irving (WLakakura —'Gear Box) should win the Essex Handicap, barring a breakdown. He has his own training track, and the “touts ” report great activity there. Scotty McGregor (Blind BoyMerry Widow), Orrie Urst (Alphar— Memories) and Ted Scott (Dram King—Spirit Level) had a try-out in Te Awamutu during a recent weekend, the two former finishing strongly, but Ted failed to stay the distance. Trainer Potts’ team, Butcher Wells, Jim Holohan and Bill Hillman, have accepted for the Williams, Plate, Butcher being the popular fancy. Garry Jenkin (Concentration —Comic Opera), a handsome chestnut, formerly owned by J. Hayes, will not carry trainer Jack O’Connor’s .colours, and should be favourite for the Ladies’ Bracelet event.

Lofty Smith (Aussie —Kookaburra) after a month’s spell to recover condition, is again in solid training. Trainer Jock Cuthbertson hopes to have him earning horse feed, at least. Alf Styes (Reformite— Patriotism) and Jack Caples (United —Ngaroma), ciwned by trainer Bill Buckley, have been in the big money lately, and are still doing a 1 strenuous ten hours daily on the track. Bill Rollins, imp. (Stepdancer— Conjuiror), who goes back to such good ones as Sleight-of-hand, Blacksmith, Dancing Doll, League, etc., is rqputed to be capable of great things, and if his performance here is up to the English level he will be :a welcome addition to the best performers heire.

Horry Bright, a classic sprinter, is heralded as the equal at weight-for-age of the best in any training camp over a six-furlong course. He is expected to do well. Jock Craig (Midnighto-Sodium) is a popular fancy among the light weights, and does his best time before breakfast.

ißobbie Ball has been running- in a milk float all the season, but is now in solid work on Murray’s Road. BerU Carter, Stokes and Foster have been schooling over the steeplechase course, and all are s/a.id to be brilliant foncers. (The Australian-bred Sinnott has proved somewhat costly to his owner, Mr Russell, and a win at this fixture would be very popular. The Russian prad Kuprinoff (Bobrikoff —Starrett) has been doing solid work since he joined the local stable, and may spring a surprise in the Russel Handicap. It is whispered that there is a dark Iholrse that may be in the money but the only information available is that the registered name is “Tanariki.” Charlie Danielson (Dreamy—Bella Rosa) has had the misfortune t/.> fall in recent starts, and his form is too erratic to expect records. Jim Busch (Burlington Bertie— Bow Bells )is another that is temporarily eclipsed. T. Burke, however, is a, promising colt. Dpirkie. the wonder horse owned by Bob Ford and trained by Jock Cuthberton, is to give an exhibition gallop, ridden by Bob More'll. The true story of this famous equine can be obtained from any PiW.D. overseer.
