TWO GAMES ON WEDNESDAY

TEDDY SHIELD AND BINNIE CUP.

Wednesday devotees of football had plenty to interest them at Albeit Park yesterday, for two impoitant games, the Binnie Cup congest be tween the champion senior teams or Wia’.pa and Cambridge Unions, and the Teddy Shield between Te Awamutu and Otorohanga school teams were played, while a further mla.tch, Te Kuit' secondary team met Te Awamutu secondary B team. At the school grounds Otorohanga and Te Awamutu primary school teams met, the foimer winning by eleven points to six. ie Kuiti tea,m was defeated by three points to nil. For the winners a try was scored by Fear.

BINNIE CUP

SUBURBS (WAIPA) v. UNITED (CAMBRIDGE).

The teams were;— iSuiburbs. —IW.Bell, E. Bell, Gilbert, Watson, M. Bell, A. Brill., Mills, Miller, R. Wvnyard, J. Wynyard, J. Askew, G. Thomson, Scriven, Campbell, M. Giface. United.— R. Easton, Burton, W. Wilson, R. Andrew, Hughes, James, Stewart, D. Wilson, P. Beer, Griffiths, Coulter, E. Beer, Hall, Hewitt, Moore. United attacked solidly and within two minutes a forward rush ended in a try for Andrew. Hewitt failed with the kick. Play was raced to the other end, by E. Bell and J. Wynyard, anti Campbell forced his way over for a try. M. Bell fa led with the kick. The visitors had the advantage of the breeze and punted high at every opportunity. Suburbs twice forced to get relief. There seemed to be no “sting” in either team, each side using the fine in preference to open play, then from Suburbs own 25 the ball was shot out quickly to E. Bell, who ran right round to score under the posts. M. Bell converted. Suburbs 8, United 3. United then attacked, and had Suburbs striving desperately to keep

them. out. United’s right wing was playing - a dashing game, but the in s de backs were not combining well. Hughes made a solo dash, and got almost to the Tine, where scrums let the heavier Suburbs forwards relieve the position. Then Askew holding on let Hewitt have a, penalty kick,, but he failed. The Suburbs forwards d,ribbled past halfway but Brill lost ground in running across. However, the forwards again pressed and Watson and M. Bell were prominent wide out, hut Andrew cleared nicely. Halftime came with play in neutral territory. After the interval play was not very lively for several minutes, with occasional flashes until from a lineout M. Bell secured, cut through and handed to Gilbert on the, line to score. The kick fa'lled. Suburbs 11, United 3.

United forwards rushed play upfield, but E. Bell intercepted and sent ihe ball out well down field.. United forced twice in quick succession to stave off thrusts by the Suburbs backs, who were making the game open. Then a forward rush saw Sc,riven, in-pass to R. Wynjtard, who scored fairly wide out. The kick failed. Suburbs 14, United 3. United forwards made ground and were in a good position, but W]. Bell punted high to the line. Next Burton created excitement by dashing away from a scrum, but he was held up. A penalty in a good position saw Hewitt convert. United 6, Suburbs 14. Play was up and down field, wiuh little advantage. Burton was hurt when E. Belli tackled him, but was soon able to resume. Even play followed. Hewitt offside let Suburbs make ground, but they seldom got the ball from scrums. Then the ball went right along the United backs to Andrew, who went up fast, but lost possession. Hot play had Suburbs bustled but E. Bell cleared and Askew carried on. Them from a scrum the ball catme from Miller to Bell to Gilbert, who cut in to score under the posts. M. Bell converted. Suburbs 19, United 6. The visitors at once attacked and got right to the line, and a penalty for holding on was used for a short punt, but gradually Suburbs got out of trouble, but United were quickly back again, till M. Bell kicked through and in a rush three-quarters of the length of the ground saw J. W'ynyard score right at the corner. The kick failed. Suburbs 22, United 6. The visitors raced to the attack again, and in a desperate melee the hall came to Burton who ran round to score under the posts. Hewitt failed with an easv kick. United 9, Suburbs 22. The game ended a minute later without further score. Neither team played up to expectat'ons. Mr W. J. Craik was the referee.

THE TEDDY SHIELD

TE AW-AMUTU V. OTOROHANGA

Keen interest was shown in the Teddy Shield final between teams representing the Te Awamutu and Otorohanga District High Schools. Te Awamutu kicked off, defending the Park ißload end. The visitors were soon on the attack and for a scrum infringement a penalty was awarded but the kick failed. Te Awamutu had to work hard to get out of danger, but they raced almost to the corner. Play was gradually worked back, and the home backs took part in a bright passing movement, and Rickit fumbling, spoiled a good opportunity. The locals attacked solidly, and roused excitement, but the winger was forced out at the corner and Otorohanga got relief with a hefty punt, and they pressed the advantage, and a penalty gave Sanders a shot at goal. It was, a splendid kick. Otorohanga 3, Te Awamutu 0. Almost at once the ball came from a scrum out to Corboy, who outpaced the opposition to score wide out. Dalton failed with the kick. Te Awamutu 3, Otoi-ohanga 3. Te Awamutu attacked again, and were awarded a penalty, in a fair position. Dalton’s kick was a good

cue, but the wind veered it right off. Then Otorohanga kicked through and Teddy mis-kicked. A race for possession saw the ball bounce over the dead-ball line. The locals were defending until Corboy kicked through and put his side on attack, but soon they were back again and even play followed, but after an attack by the visitors the ball came to Sanders, who promptly potted a clever goal. Otorohanga 7, Te Awamutu 3. The locals attacked, but a knock-on by Blair spoiled a nice passing movement. The visitors worked play past Te Awanrutu’s twenty-five, where solid work followed, and Otorohanga! mulled a good opportunity, and after a force-down Te Awamutu! got clear. Half-time came with Otorohanga attacking.

On resuming Te Awamutu attacked with a slight breeze behind them, and Otorohanga had to force. The locals then eased up and Otorohanga attacked with loose forward rushes. The locals attacked, and Hey cut-in nicely to put his men on side, but a knock-on lost the advantage. Otorohanga’s fullback had to kick the ball dead to avoid a try. Almost at once Corboy kicked a penaltiy goal. Te Awamutu 6j Otorohanga 7. A couple of minutes later M. Blair raced over for a try, completely outpointing the opposition, but the kick at goal failed. Te Awamutu 9, Otorohanga 7. After a period of even play L. Dalton bustled through and scored a try in a good position, but Corboy failed to convert. Te Awamutu 12, Otorohanga 7. The game ended soon afterwards without alteration of the scores. Mr R. L. Adams refereed.
