AGAINST THE PEOPLE
“ The British Fascist leader desires (to (build up a private army or police force, after the m'a.nner of the Nazi Brown Shirts. The people of this country do not mean to stand for this thing, especially now that they have seen how such a force might conduct itself. Sir Oswald Mosley’s sinister avhwal of his aim raises afresh the wearing of political uniforms, which had already caused grave concern to the authorities, and must now have even stronger claims on their attention. It is not merely a question of the Black Shirts. One ‘ defence force ’ would invite another, and we should soon have rival bodies encroaching on the functions of the police, ovePhwSng quiet citizens, and generally leaking a nuisance of themselves; and if privately-controlled forces, so alien to British ways, were allowed to grow, their menace might be even greater. The appeal to force is an Appeal against Parliament and the reign of law.”—The Sunday Times.
