RUGBY FOOTBALL

LAST SATURDAY’S PLAY. —, BALLtfSTITE CUP FINAL. The only game played at Albert last Slarcurday was the final, for the Ballistite Cup, between Suburbs (this seasons champions) and TokanUo t R ‘ Callis was referee. Suburbs kicked off and immediately attacked, bustiyng Tokanu’s rearguaid and actually going over the line but R. Wynyard failed to connect and Tokanui [forced. W. Bell stopped a Tokanui rush, and Watson came fast after a punt by P. Bell, but he knocked on. Even play followed, and then Sargent kicked out at the twenty-five flag. Then Sargent bustled through to the line and passed to Hughes, who scored. Sargent convened. Tokanui 5, Suburbs 0. A good kick by A. Br.;ll gained ground lor Suburbs; from a line-out the ball went right across to E. Bell, who had too much pace for the opposition, and scored a try wide out. l. Bell \ailed with the kick. Suburbs S, Tokanui 5. Keeping up the pressure Suburbs had their opponents in trouble and J. Hughes offside right in front of goai let B. Bed convert. Suburbs 6, 'lokanui 5. These eleven points were scored in as many minutes. Tokanui attacked, but P. Bell sent them back to halfway, and they had Tokanui pressed for several minutes. Then the red forwards rushed upheld, but were promptly sent back with a passing rush. Watson fumbled when a try seemed certain, and a penalty let Toklagiu. out of difficulties for a Lttle, but M. Grace punted high, and sent them back. Grace was again prominent, but he was up-ended near the line. Tokanui bustled Brill and gained ground, but W'atson marked. However, he spoiled any advantage by missing a, pass immediately after. Tokanui' pack worked out of danger, but Suburbs were quickly attack ng again, until; Broughton dodged through to make valuable ground. P. Beil stopped the rush, but then' Sargent barged his way upfield, land tne ball went out at halfway. Even play followed, until a noose scramble saw Tokanui force. Again the Suburbs attacked. Gilbert short punting fo,r J. Wynyard to score under the crossbar. P. Bell converted. Suburbs 11, Tokanui 5. Broughton had an unsuccessful penalty kick and halftime was sounded.

Play was fairly uninteresting for a while, until Broughton and Walker to'ok play into Suburbs’ twenty-five, but E. Bell relieved with ia line kick. Howevqr, the advantage was lost until E. Be| received a pass from Watson and raced up the line, but in dodging the fullback he stepped over the l.me when a try seemed certain. Evien play followed until Broughton was caught in possession. Play drifted back to midfield, and again Broughton hung on too Ijong. A smart side-step by Gilbert let him ove,r for a clever try. P. Bell added the minor points. Suburbs 16, Tokanui 5. A little later P. Bell h|a,d another shot from a penalty, but he failed, and Tokanui forced. L.veiy play followed, with the ball travelling fast. Suburbs backs were combining well. Sargent relieved with a good line kick, but his team mates were tiring*, and p: ; ay was mostly in Tokanui’s territory. Some hot work on their line saw the ball shoot out smartly to Gilbert, who cut-in smartly to dive over. P. Beil failed with the kick. Suburbs lb, Tokanui 5. Suburbs sustained the attack and a bright, passing l bout only broke down when E. Bell over-ran a pass from W/atson. Lifting in the scrum gave Tokanui a penalty, and they went right to Suburbs’ twentyfive flag. However, the attack was soon beaten off, but they regained the ground with line kicks. Suburbs backs kicked through and Tokanui had to force. A penalty for scrum nfringement saw M. Grace fail with the kick, and the game ended: Suburbs 19, Tokanui 5. Te Awamutu seniors journeyed our to Waikeria to play the home team, but the visitors could only muster eleven players when the whistle sounded. Naturally, they were at a disadvantage, and Waikeria made the pace fast, recording two tries and a penalty goal to Te Awamutu’s single try by half-time. In the second half, Te Awamutu had its fuT quota and were definitely superior. They put on a potted goal by W. Tombs, and trie? by Stanford, Laskey and McAlpine, while Waikeria could only add one more try. Thus the game ended: Te Awamutu 16, Waikeria 12. Mr W. J. Craik refereed.

CUCICSEY CUP CONTEST. WAIPA’S CHALLENGE FAILS. Waipa Rugby Union sent its thirdgrade rep team to Matamata on Saturday as challengers for the Cucksey Cup', and it seems that the boys had hard luck in not annexing the trophy. They actually scored a try (by West) and a penalty goal (by Dalton) to Matamata’s try and two penalty goals. There were one or two incidents that did not please the Wiaipa players and their supporters, and ..t, would seem -hat Matamata were lucky to retail the cup. Waipa played better football, and spectators were practicably all agreed that they would win, but adverse ,rulings spoiled the opportunity. For instance, with a scrum near Wa’pa’s goal, the visitng halfback sought to roll the ball in, but one of the Matamata front-row forwards lifted his foot, and prevented the ball going in the scrum. The referee, who was on the far side la,warded a penalty against Waipa, and a goal was regis* ered. Again, a ball wta.s punted down over Waipa’s goal line and Kidd forced by making contact between hand, ba :l and ground, ias he ran, thinking that constituted a force. A Matamata forward at once ran in and touched down. The referee (awarded a try, sav'ng that the progress of the ball must-be definitely stopped before a try could be awarded. Practically the rbfme thing happened when Corboy raced over Matamata’s line for a try —which was disallowed. That is the story las told to our representative, and we might add that the Wa’pa players themselves were so indignant that they even offered to pay their own fares to go back and challenge l9,gain. That, of course, is impossible. They must accept the position as it stands and hope for better luck next year. They cannot challenge again this season.

JUNIOR REP. MATCH. WAIPA v. OTOROHANGA. Waipa Rugby Union undertook to send its junior rep. team to Otorohanga last Saturday for a friendly game with the Otorohanga junior reps., but on Saturday morning it became evident that very few of the selected players could make the trip. Various reasons were given, most of them being to the effect that dairying duties prevented them getting the whole afternoon off. However, the manager and selector got busy, and about half the original selection was available. Emergencies were called upon, and ult'mately there were fifteen players. They put up a good battle, too, for when the final whistle sounded Otorohanga had only scored one try, the game ending Otorohanga 3, Waipa 0. It was by no means a fair test, and not at all satisfactory even to the victors, who had reason to expect that -Waipa would be represented by at least two-thirds of its best players. PRINCE OF WALES CUP. PLAYERS FROM KING COUNTRY AND WAIKATO. Mr Joseph, selector of the King Country Rugby Union, has been notified by the New Zealand Maori Football Advisory Board that Len Kawe, W.
