TOPICS OP THE HOUR. ITEMS OP INTEREST. (Our Resident Representative). Otorohanga fielded two basketball teams against Pokuru Club on Saturday afternoon, at Pokuru. Misses W. Bowyer and Mavis Harris captained the Otorohanga A and B teams respectively, and Miss Jane Fitzell was the claptain for Pokuru. The home players defeated the A team by 13 goals to 10, and the B tclim by 10 goals to 6. The visitors were generously entertained by the victors. Waipa Rugby Union’s junior representatives engaged Otorohanga junior representatives on the Island Reserve, Otorohanga, on Saturday, and were defeated by 3 points to nil, after and interesting display of excellent football. Mr Mossman refereed. The Druids’ Lodge and Otorohanga senior representatives next engaged in a stern battle for victory, under the control of Mr H. Milter. The craftsmen defeated their ti vials by 12 points to 6, both teams being all in at the finish. The Otorohanga Gun Club opened its season on Saturday under ideal weather conditions and before a. strong gathering of shootists and enthusiasts. The patron. Mir Walter Signal, welcomed the visitors and the referee, Mr T. MeCready, addressed the new members on the rules of the Club, giving valuable instruction regarding the handling of loaded guns. Members then competed for the Murray Pratt and F.A.C. ti'ophies, the contests resulting:—No. 1 Pratt trophy (B class), 7 birds (9 competitors).'— (B. Scown land R. F. Park tied for first and in the resultant, shoot-off Scown proved victorious. No. 2 Sweep (A class) 7 birds (8 entries). —'W. Seymour (16yds) and George Holden (16yds) tied and divided. Holden shot all his birds w’th the first barrel. No. 3 F.A.C. trophy (B ciass) 7 birds (9 entries). —R. Scown (13yds) 5„ and Rangi Maurua (11yds) 5, tied and shot off, Maurua winning. No. 4 (A class) 7 birds (6 entries). —W. Seymour (17yds) 6 and F. Frazer (13yds) 6, tied, and divided. The shooting by the new members was excellent, considering some of them had nev£r shot before in competitions. Mr M. Pratt is in Christchurch, representing Otorohanga in the N.Z. live-bird championsh;p which was formerly annexed by tlr'is consistent 'marksman.
