TABLE TENNIS DANCE

A KIHIKIHI FUNCTION. There was a great gathering of the table tennis clan at Kihikihi on Wednesday last for the social evening and presentation to the winners of the shield for the group competition. In introducing Mr Wyllie to the assembly, the president of the group, Mr W. McGhie, paid a tribute to the sportsmanlike spirit in which the games had been played, and the wholehearted manner in which the players had co-operated to make the competition a success. Mr Wyllie, who was greeted with applause, congratulated the clubs concerned on the inauguration of the competition. “It had undoubtedly promoted interest in the game to a great extent, not only amongst the clubs of the group, but others as well. As a result many inter club matches had been played and all had learned a lot, which led to great improvement in the manner of playing the game, which was one of the finest forms of entertainment of that sort available to so many, and in which such a great number could take part in such really enjoyable sociable recreation.” , Mr Wyllie then called upon the president of the Tokanui Club to receive the shield on behalf of his club, and congratulated the club on its success, which they well deserved. In accepting the shield on behalf of the winners, who were accorded a hearty ovation, Mr Howie expressed his club’s pleasure at winning the shield, and particularly his appreciation of the “really splendid” sporting spirit in which the whole of the competition matches had been played. He hoped some other club would win it the next season, as it would be much better for the game, which with the social atmosphere it. created was of the greatest importance. The president of the other clubs congratulated the winners, and eulogised the great social benefit the games had provided. Reference wa.~> made to the splendid work done by the group president, Mr W. McGhie, and the secretary, Mr J. A. Marquiss, who were accorded three hearty cheers as a mark of appreciation. Dancing was enjoyed to music supplied by Mr Dalton, and between dances Messrs Robinson, Perrott, Price, Richardson and McGhie favoured the company with musical items, dialogues and recitations, which were enthusiastically received. A sumptous supper was done full justice to, and added the necessary touch to elicit the full appreciation accoided to the evening, which Avas by all voted “a great turn-out, and only a bob. too. The match between group club teams and other clubs will take place on Thursday at Kihikihi Town Hall, and the keenness which players are exhibiting in the contest augurs we for a good exhibition of table tennis talent. As all interested in the game are invited, a good evening is confidently anticipated.
