POLLED HEREFORDS

PIONEER BREEDER AGAIN IMPORTS FROM UNITED STATES.

Much has been written in regard to the future of the Polled Hereford breed in New Zealand and its introduction into this country. Actually the pioneer importer of this breed in New Zealand is Mr F. E. Humphreys, of Ngatapa, Gisborne, for whom Messrs Wlright, Stephenson, and Conp pany, Ltd., imported from the United States of America in 1929 the Polled Hereford bull Royal Gem, and at a later date the Polled Hereford heifer Dora Willdale. Royal Gem proved to be a great success as a breeding bull, and his sons have been exported to both New South Wales and Victoria, while the blood of other sons is to be found in the herds of two former presidents of the New Zealand Hereford Breeders’ Association Mr J. James, W/airarapa, and Mr A. S. Holms, Southland. Not only has the progeny of Royal Gem been distributed throughout New 'Zealand, but high honours have been won by his stock at leading New Zealand shows against Horned Herefords, and a striking victory in this connection was Mr Humphreys’ win in the yearling bull clas sat the last Royal show, although this was the strongest class in the section. At the same show another of his yearling polled bulls realised 190 guineas, a great price for the times. Messrs Wright, Stephenson, and Company advise that they have now imported a further shipment of Polled Herefords from the United States. Included is the specially-selected yearling bull Beau Perfection 127th, for Mr Humphreys. This is the best bull of its age that could be secured in America. It comes from one of America’s largest and most successful herds, and is by

a very noted breeding sire in Beau Perfection 2nd. This bull was selected by the same man who chose Royal Gem for Mr Humphreys, and the new importation is to be mated with the latter bull’s progeny. Beau Perfection 127th is of the same low-set, thick and even type that characterises Beau Perfection 2nd. The firm named has also imported for the widely-known Romney breeder, Mr R. W. Matthews, of Waiorongomai, Featherston, the two-year-old Polled Hereford bull Santos Junior and the two-year-old Polled Hereford heifer Jean Mischief 2nd. The bull is a magnificent type, and must prove a great acquisition to the Dominion as a sire. The heifer, which was in calf, is also a fine type, and recently in quarantine gave birth to &■ heifer calf. Jean Mischief 2nd is from the same herd as the foundation Polled Hereford imported into New Zealand, Royal Gem, and is also related to that great breeding bull. The importaiton of these three, animals to New Zealand now brings the total number of importations of Poleld Herefords to ten head.
