GAME OF CHANCE

ENGLISH DLSCUSSION OVER

BRIDGE.

According to the Overseas Daily Mail a remarkable situation is developing as the result of the decision of the Harrogate police that bridge is a game of chance and, therefore, cannot legally he played on licensed premises.

It is now proposed to avoid the possible consequences of playing this game on licensed premises or in public buildings by establishing a camp “Somewhere in the West Country,” and playing the competitions abandoned at Harrogate under canvas. This statement was* made by Mr B. C. Westall, hon. secretary of the National Bridge Association and chairman of the organising committee of the Harrogate Congress. “The ultimatum of the Harrogate police has stirred up a real hornet’s nest,” he said. “Two laws are involved—the Licensing and GamingActs—and the decision means that no party of four, although they may be of the same family, can play bridge in any licensed premises for a penny a hundred. “It remains to he seen whether anyone will want to take action against us under the Gaming Act when we hold the bridge camp. If they do, we will fight it.” According to legal text books the unlawful games now are “ace of hearts, faro, basset, hazard, passage, roulette, every game of dice except back-gammon, and every game of cards which is not u game of mere skill.”.

Whist has been adjudged to be a game of chance, and there is little doubt that if the point is taken bridge will be similarly adjudged.
