WORK OF THE MONTH

IN WAIPA COUNTY. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The following report of work done since last meeting was submitted by the engineer, Mr J. W. Civil, at Wednesday’s meeting of the Waipa County Council:—^ KAIPAKI RIDING. Great South Road, Hamiitoh-Te Awamutu.—Banking up of metal with clay has been carried out in the .vicinity of Ohaupc and 187cyds of Te Kawa metal supplied, carted and spread and grading carried out by motor grader. Parallel Road, drainage.—Good progress is being made with the subsidised unemployment men from Cambridge, under Foreman Edwards, on deepening and widening drain on this' road and three additional culverts laid into position. General surfaeework has been carried out on other roads in the Riding. / PUKEICURA RIDING. Kairangi Road. —49Geyds of gravel have been carted from Peppercorn’s pit and spread; also four sign posts prepared and erected on this road, also,, one at west end of Hannon’s Road. ’Tui'kington’s Road.—232cyds of gravel have been carted from Grey’s pit and 24 chains of new formation gravelled. Skeet’S Road.—Timber has been supplied. and an 18ft bridge erected by J. D. Dixon. Grading and general surfaeework has been carried out on various other roads in the Riding. Drainage.—Smith and party are making good progress with cleaning of. drains in the Pukekura drainage area. RANGIAOHIA RIDING. Great South Read M.H. Hamilton to Te Awamutu.—222cyds of clay have been carted for banking up metal and 193 cyds of meta/ supplied, carted and spread; also grading carried but by motor gijader. -Te Awamutu-Cambridge M.H.'— 35cyds of metal chips have been cart- ’ ed and spread and grading carried out. Hairini-Puahue Road. —107cyds of Otorohanga gf&vel and 30cyds of Puahue metal have been supplied, carted and repairs carried out. Lichfield’s Road. —Formation is being Carried out by the Puahue unemployment camp men, also creek diverted and 12ft bridge erected with cor-Crete abutments. Application lAbde on estimates for £6O (£2 for £1 grant) to form 22 chains of 20ft road at the south end of this road. Grading and general surfaeework has’been carried out on other roads id the Riding. ORAKAU RIDING. Great South Road M.H. Te Awa-mutU-Cbunty Bdy.—llOcyds of Te Kawa 'metal have been supplied, carted and spread and grading carried out by motor grader. Kihikihi-Arapuni M.H.—llßcyds of Puniu River gravel, 86cyds from 14mile quarry, and 92cyds gravel from Rae’s pit have been, carted and spread and grading canned out. Earle’s Road £1 for £1 Grant.— Contractor Gee has satisfactorily finished his contract No. 272 forming 60 chains of 20ft road; five concrete 9in pipe culverts have been laid into position, and 11 chains of the road metalled at the junction with the Kihikihi-Arapuni Main Highway. Owairaka Valley Road.—l7scyds of Puniu River gravel have been carted from dumps by our own trucks and repairs carried out. Tika Road.—'Some 34?>cyds of Puniu River gravel have been carted and repairs carried out. Allen’s Road.—Repairs have been carried out on this road with 48cyds of Puniu River gravel. Rotcngata Road. —Grader work has been canried out on this road by C. 11. Wjalker with team, and 178 cyds of gravel sand carted from Rae’s Pit by Contractor Grinter. Also have carted further 134 cyds cf gravel from Rae’s Pit, 68 cyds on to Karaka Road, 30 cyds on to Mlaru Road, and 36 cyds on to Te Ana Road. Waiteti Read (re maintenance). — In company with Cr McGee arranged and met the Matamata County Engineer and one of the councillors, Mr Nickle, representing the Maungatautari Riding of the Matamata County. After a friendly discussion they could not see their way clear to adept the Waiteti stream bridge as a boundary for maintenance purposes, so I arranged for repairs to be carried out from Sharp’s to County boundary, which has been completed by C. Wtalken with team. Tairi Road.—With Cr McGee I inspected this road and met Mr Graff with the suggestion of Mr Graff con. tributing towards the cost of reforming, culverting and metalling if Government Grant £1 for £1 could be obtained. As he could not see his way clear to do so, the only thing that can be done if council agrees to the exexpenditure is to place the culvert and fix up. junction of the Tairi Road with the Kihikihi-Arapuni road, so that, the present Tairi track can be used. _ ■ Contractor Rogers has completed his . contract. No. 270, cf scooping 1300 ...cubic yards of Puniu River grAvel. Contractoi’i Glassey has also completed his contract, No. 275, carting 1180 cubic yards of Puniu River gravel. Grading and general surfaeework . has been carried out on various other roads Tn the riding. MANGAPIKO RIDING. •Frankton-Pivongia Main Highway. —134 cyds of metal have been carted from the Pirongia dump and repairs carilfed out from Pirongia toward Tc Rote. Frontier. Road.—4o cyds of metal from the Pirongia dump and 186 cyds gravel sand from the railway pit have been carted and spread. Te Atvamutu - Meadway’s Main Road. —100 cyds of Te Kawa metal and 64 cyds of gravel sand from the railway pit have been carted and repairs carried out. Bank Road.—2B6 cyds of gravel sand have been carted from Bowman’s pit, and this road sanded throughout, giving three settlers an all-weather access. 44 cyds of gravel sand have been carted from railway pit and spread on Burns’ and Nga-roto-Paterangi roads. Sing’s Road.—46 cyds of sand have been conveyed from Bowman’s pit and spread on this road also Lake Road repaired with* 18 cyds of sand from Butrow’s pit. •

Lake Road Culvert.—Timber has

been supplied and fixed into position in culvert to allow the Ngaroto Drainage Board to lower the drain at culvert 18in., the Beard paying for the timber and labour. Sittauer’s Road.—3o cyds of sand have been caited from Perrin’s pit and spread on the new formation. Grading and general surfaeework has been carried out on other roads in the riding. KAKEPUKU RIDING. Te Awamutu-Burton’s Main Highway.—4oi cyds of Te Kawa metal, 101 cyds Otorohanga gravel and 60 cyds of Waipa River gravel have been supplied, carted and spread. Factory Road.—6B cyds cf Waipa River gravel nave been carted and repairs carried out. Kakepuku Road.—77 cyds of Otorohanga shingle have been supplied, carted and repairs carried cut. The unemployment men under Scheme No. 5 have stripped and excavated and stacked ready for carting some 160 cyds of good shingle in Coverdale’s. Te Ma’whai Road.—4o cyds of Otorohanga gravel have been supplied, carted and repairs effected; also 40 cyds of Otorohanga gravel carted on to Cmickshank’s Road and spread. Wailceria Road.—237 cyds of gravel have been carted and portions of this road resurfaced and repaired, gravel being scooped and loaded into trucks by wiaikeria labour. Drainage.—-Tenders have been called for two contracts and contracts let to the lowest tenders. Contract No. 282 was let io Paki Ahipi for £47 18s 6d, being for clearing 213 chains at 4s 6d per chain, and the work has been completed. Contract No. 283 was let to H. Kupe for £SO 4s, being for cleaning, etc., 251 chains at 4s per chain, which has also been completed. General surfaeework has been carried out on various other roads in the riding. GENERAL. Estimates have been made out for the maintenance, of main highways within our county for 1934-1935 period, including 1 mile '32 chains of maintenance sealing. Also estimates for construction and sealing cf Great South Road for same period. Application of yoad grants have beer, made out and forwarded to the Public Works Department to be placed on the Government 1934-1935 road •estimates. Copy of applications are before this meeting.
