ITEMS OF INTEREST. DEATH OF FARM HAND. (Our Resident Representative.) Mr Norman Harold Pope, aged 22 years, single, employed, on the dairy farm of Mr C. B. Hobson, of Whawharua, who suffered a fracture of his spine whilst mustering the herd on luesday last, died at the Hamilton Hospital on Thursday. When the accident occurred, deceased was endeavouring to overtake a cow that had broken away from the mob, and, stepping on a small bridge, he slipped, and in falling heavily struck his head on the edge of a drain. The inquest, held before Mr F. W. Platts, S.M., coroner (at Hamilton), was adjourned sine die. The late Mr Pope was the eldest son of Mr and Mrs H. V. Pope, of Avondale, Auckland. The first instruction gathering of the recently - formed Otbrohanga branch of St. John Ambulance, drew upwards of 30 members, and a number of intending members. Dr C. B. Gilberd, the lecturer, congratulated the class on the spirit which had brought such a first attendance. Their work would fill the gap from the period of accidents, or sudden illness, until the arrival of the medical man. The work was one of the most useful anyone could embark upon, as they were enabled to prevent much suffering, and, in many cases, to save life as well. The doctor then gave instruction in “first aid,” which he classed as one of the greatest services one could render to mankind. Mr S. A. Cook, the honorary instructor, stated that there were 165 medical men in the Auckland province who gave free advice, and rendered services to St. John Ambulance. The members contribute 5s per unit, books, bandages and equipment, but those who were not in a position to do this would not be debarred from the cbrps.

Mr Frank Nathan, owner and editor cf the Tokomaru Bay Advertiser, is at present visiting relatives at Otorohanga. He reports business very satisfactory on the East Coast. Mr J. A. Sparks, populariy-known in local musical, operatic and dramatic circles, has made a good recovery from a rather serious and prolonged illness.

At the annual meeting of the Waitcmo Electric Power Board it was decided to make the Otorohanga offices full-time, owing to the fact of increased local business. By keeping the construction stocks records at Otorohanga, the time of the clerk wi'l be fully occupied, and outside men will be engaged in the meterreading work. M'r W. S. Cato succeeds Mr W. A. Lee as chairman of the Board for the present year. There are three large new stores in tile course of erection in Otorohanga’s main street, Wallace Supplies, the Bargain Stores and SelpHelp, being the interested concerns. During the week a new auctioneering firm commenced business, in the large premises lately occupied by the Farmers’ Auctioneering Co., Ltd. During the past few days the Commission sitting at the Otorohanga Magistrate’s Courb, have been exceedingly busy in taking evidence, and examining those district farmers who are seeking re 1 ief from overburdensome mortgages on their; holdings.
