IS IT A HOAX?

SEPARATE GOVERNMENT FOR SOUTH ISLAND. The Marlborough Express has published a copy of a circular it has received purporting to have been issued by “ the Christchurch executive of the central department, South Island Supreme Government.” The document sets out that South Islanders feel they have been neglected for a long period of years by the Government and states, failing redress of demands, it is proposed to petition the King to establish a separate South Island Government. The demands include: (1) The abolition of alleged exploitation of South Island in price fixation and commodities; (2) equal representation in Parliament on the basis of area instead of population; (3) return of £500,000 belonging- to the South Island highways fund which was “borrowed” by the Finance Minister in 1928; (4) direct shipping and mail services; (5) constructios of canals where required, as at Cristchurch; (0) the completion of the Avhole of the South Island railways at present under construction; (7) abolition of boards and commissions; (8) overhaul of the public service; (9) abolition of the Order-in-Council system; (10) light of recall of members of the House of Representatives and (11) restoration of wages cuts.
