WAIPA RUGBY UNION

MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE MEETS. SUBURBS’ PROTEST SUSTAINED. The ordinary monthly meeting of the Waipa Rugby Union management commfttee was held on Monday evening, Mr J. G. Wynyard presiding, and there were present: Messrs G. W. Mail’s, A. O. Finch, G. Reynolds, R. Smith, H. Worthington, H. Brill, R. L. Adams, and H. T. Haselden (secretary). The secretary, Rotorua Union, wrote regretting that the earlier arrangements for a game with Waip£. reps, at Rotorua would have to be cancelled, for the Rotorua reps, would travel to Wiairoa (Hawke’s Bay) to play on June 4th. However, Rotorua would be glad to have a visit from Waipa at a date later in the season, and Rotorua would return the visit in the following season.— Received.

Taupiri Union forwarded challenges for the Boyce Cup (juniors) and Cucksey Cup (thirds), and also invited Waipa senior reps, to play Taupiri a friendly game at a date prior to the commencement of the representative fixtures. 'Hie secretary reported having received an offer from Technical Old Boys, Auckland, to come to Te Awalmitu on Saturday, June 9th to play the Waipa senior rep. team. Mr Haselden added that the following Saturday was a race day in Te Awamutu, and he wondered if the Waipa Union would play its usual competitions on that day. A suggestion was that Waipa send its rep. team away on that day. Another suggestion was to accept Technical Old Boys’ offer, and send Waipa’s B rep. team away on the same day, thus providing a game for 30 senior players on that day. It was decided to postpone all Union competitions on Saturday, June 16th (race day). Mr Mairs favoured trying to arrange a senior rep. match outside the territory on race day, and it was decided to ask the selector if he can arrange for a sufficiently strong rep. team to play Taupiri on that day at Taupiri. It was decided to accept the offer of Technical Old Boys’ Club to visit Te Awafnutu on June 9th. Mr L. Bulford appealed against the Waipa Union’s treatment of his application for regrading to junior status. He gave particulars of his play as a senior in the past seven years. Comment was made that some of the facts stated were incorrect. Mr Brill stated that according to advice he had received in Hamilton a classification officer only has jurisdication during the “off” season, and that he cannot promote or regrade any player during the season. It was decided to forward the peal. Then Mr Brill claimed that Waipa Union could regrade any player, and he asked that the matter be disposed of at. once. It was ridiculous to keep both Bulford and Macky out of the game, and they were not wanted by any senior team. To a question, Mi’ Brill said he was convinced that the Waipa classification officer could not, or should not, act during the progress of competitions. He quoted Mr Thompson, Waikato Union secretary, as his informant. After a general discussion it was decided, following a report by the classification officer, to regrade Bulford to junior status. The secretary Suburbs Club formally protested against Rovers Club being awarded a win in last Saturday’s senior game on the grounds that Rovers played Ate Jackson who had not fulfilled the residential qualifications requiring 14 days in Waipa territory after being absent since last October; also that during his absence he played for another club from which he had no transfer. It was therefore asked that Subui-bs be awarded the game. After consideration and hearing various statements it was decided to award the game to Suburbs Club, subject to confirmation of a telegram from the Wairoa Club. It was decided to provide a seat inside the fence of No. 1 ground for officials of Waipa Union and those of other unions, and the Press representatives. Mr H. Worthington was added to the Rules Revision Sub-committee. It was decided to extend the senior championship competition for another round, making three rounds in this grade, and that all games in this third round be played at headquarters. Suburbs Club was granted permission to play an outside team on Saturday next, if desired. POSITION OF THE TEAMS. Last Saturday’s play concluded the first round of the Waipa Rugby Union’s championships, and the position of the teams is now:— SENIORS.
