WHANGAREI, Monday. “I have no hesitation in saying definitely that I consider the minimum' penalty too heavy, but I have no option but to inflict the fines,” said Mr G. M. Morris, S.M., in the Wihangarei Police Court to-day in inflicting fines of £lO each on Frank Nelson ana Lancelot Timperley for obstructing a ranger. Fine's of £5 each were also imposed for shooting hen pheasants. Richard Henry Kehoe, Bay of Islands Acclimatisation Society ranger, said he approached Timperley, whom he saw shoot a bird, ancT asked to be allowed to inspect the bag. Defendant ran away. Witness eventually qaught him. The bag contained two cock pheasants and two hen pheas- , ants. Nelson also ran away when questioned. A struggle ensued before witness could examine the bag, contained one hen pheasant. The magistrate then imposed the fines.
