THE “MONSTER”

Speaking at the annual dinner of the Edinburgh Inverness-shire Association recently, Colonel D. W. Cameron of Lochiel, C.M.G., said—“lf I were to propose a toast tonight I would propose the toast of the Loch Ness .Monster.” “Do I believe in the Monster, or do I not?” he continued. “Being an Inverness-shire man and Convener of the County interested in keeping up the rateable value, of course I believe in the Monster. What it is, is a different matter altogether. “I am told it is not a seal, nor an otter, nor an eel; I am told that it is nothing that travels on land, or anything that swims in water, or anything that flies by air. “Therefore, I leave it to you to guess what it is. Anyhow I hope that nobody will discover it, for it would cease to be a mystery. So long as the mystery goes on, so long will it draw people to investigate, and the more people who come the more money they will leave in the county. Long may the Monster live! If I were to propose a toast to-night, I would propose the toast of the Monster.”
